Jockey Declan Bates had his eye in ahead of his Lexus Melbourne Cup ride aboard the German import, Ashrun, by winning the World Horse Racing Desirable Stakes for his main supporter Archie Alexander.
With the change from blinkers to winkers, Alexander’s talented filly No Restriction was given a perfect ride by Bates and let down exceptionally well to skip clear to win by a length margin. The Sydney visitors and market favourites Joviality ($3.50 with TAB) and Sweet Reply ($6 with TAB) were unable to get clear galloping room in the straight.
Trainer Archie Alexander was delighted to see his faith in Bates pay off.
“It’s brilliant he’s got a ride in the Cup and he’s just got to get the job done. He deserves it,” Alexander said.
“It’s a fantastic week and every trainer wants to be here. I’m delighted for the owners. There’s some really good owners in the horse. Bred by Three Bridges who are good friends.”
Jockey Declan Bates said it was a huge thrill to ride a winner on Cup day.
“It’s the biggest day of the year, I’ve got a ride in the big one and I’ve got a winner on the board earlier in the day. Everything is coming together nicely so hopefully we can have a better day later.”
