The Archie Alexander-trained outsider Barade managed to hold off the English import Almania to win the opening event at Flemington by the barest of margins.

Ridden by jockey Declan Bates, Barade showed plenty of tenacity to win the Very Special Kids Pin And Win Trophy by a nose over the Kris Lees-trained Almania who was having his first run in Australia.

The victory brought up Bates’ second win during Cup Week, having also won aboard the Alexander-trained No Restriction on Lexus Melbourne Cup day.

Archie Alexander thanked the ownership group on pushing to run into today’s contest.

“Full credit to Terry Henderson (of OTI Racing). I wanted to go to the Ararat Cup tomorrow and Terry said ‘let’s roll the dice’ in the big one here rather than going to Ararat. He was right and I think he would have been a good thing at Ararat,” Alexander said post-race.
