Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young’s talented mare Rich Hips has returned to the winner’s stall with an electric turn-of-foot to win The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m).
Ridden by Michael Dee, who also won the race in 2017 aboard Pedrena, Rich Hips settled towards the rear of the field before letting down impressively to reel in the well-backed favourite Lyre ($3.30 with TAB) in the closing stages.
Despite failing to beat a runner home last start at Caulfield, co-trainer Trent Busuttin still had plenty of confidence heading into today’s Lexus Melbourne Cup meeting.
“At her last start at Caulfield, she went back to last, and her sectionals were the best last-placed you will ever see,” Busuttin said post-race.
“First Light Racing are big supporters of ours. We’ve been patient with this mare. I’ve told the owners all along that we’d get a stakes race with her, so it’s great to do. It’s great to do it on Melbourne Cup day.”
Jockey Michael Dee said it was massive for the mare to hit the line as she did.
“We actually wanted to be more handy today but she has a tendency to be ‘sideways’ so we just had to make do. Then she sprouted wings when she got clear. It was (to her) credit that we were able to get balanced so quickly and sprout wings as she did.”
Rich Hips jumped as a $21 chance with TAB.
