A promising sprinter may have been unveiled in The Amanda Elliott as the Michael Moroney-trained Shelby Cobra proved too strong in the Listed contest.

Bringing up Moroney’s 21st winner during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, his first being Second Coming in 1997, Shelby Cobra took control of the race half-way down the straight before powering away to win by a length on the line.

Trainer Michael Moroney was thrilled to see the Toronado colt win black-type at his third race start.

“Paul (Moroney) spotted him (at the Inglis Premier Sales). I go and follow Paul around and we make the final decisions but when I saw this one, he was such a beautifully balanced horse. I saw Toronado race at Ascot when he was racing there. He (looks like) his father probably more than any other I saw that year.”

Having placed three times during Cup week this year, jockey Ben Melham landed his breakthrough victory with the promising colt.

“It’s been a frustrating week but it’s good to get one on the board,” he said post-race. “He’s a lovely colt I think. He gave me a really impressive feel. It’s good to get a winner for Rupert Legh. He’s been giving me a little bit of support of late and obviously Mike Moroney, so it’s good to get on the board.”
