Anthony and Sam Freedman’s exciting colt Ain’tnodeeldun cemented himself as a stayer with potential with a gutsy win in the TAB Trophy.

The 1800m contest has unveiled plenty of talent over the last couple of years with Russian Camelot finishing runner-up in 2019, and last year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup winner Vow and Declare winning the race in 2018.

Choosing to bypass last Saturday’s Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) for the Listed TAB Trophy, co-trainer Sam Freedman believes the decision will greatly benefit the colt has he continues to mature.

“He might just have a bit more brilliance at this stage than being a Derby horse. I think we’ll put him away now. He’s won three on the bounce and is deserving of a really good break. He’ll mature a lot. He’s still just a frame. We’ll look at a race like the Rosehill Guineas in the autumn.”

The heavily-supported favourite, Ain’tnodeeldun ($1.90 with TAB), hit the lead early in the straight before fending off the challenges from the hard-fit Jason Warren and Dean Krongold-trained Confrontational.

Freedman said his colt can improve further with something to chase down.

“I’m not sure that’s the best way to ride him. I think he’s better with something to chase. He’s still getting a bit lost when he’s hitting the front and it’s a long straight when you have to stave them off.”

Jockey Damian Lane added: “He’s always shown a lot from a very young age and he’s just taking a little while to put the pieces of the puzzle together and they’re slowly starting to click now. Promising signs going forward.”
