Continuing his affinity with the ‘straight six’, the South Australian, Kemalpasa, made it back-to-back victories in the TAB Stakes in emphatic fashion.
Handling all conditions, the Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained gelding won the race last year on a soft track before proving too speedy today on the good surface, with the Danny O’Brien-trained Order Of Command finishing runners-up on both occasions.
The five-year-old gelding had placed third in the G2 Gilgai Stakes at Flemington last start, showing he was somewhere right near his best heading into today’s contest.
Speaking from Morphettville, SA, co-trainer Richard Jolly said the main target had always been the TAB Stakes.
“We had him set for this race a fair while ago and he just seems to love the straight. It’s always hard in a Group 2 on Derby Day to be too confident. I thought it was going better than he was last year in the last couple of weeks leading into this.”
Steered by Craig Williams, Kemalpasa was strong throughout.
“He did all the running, Craig said. “I just sat on him and had to be aerodynamic in that wind. It was a very courageous effort on his part to do the running from barriers to the winning post.”
Kemalpasa started at $4.60 with TAB. Octane was the unplaced $3.40 favourite.
