Statement from the Victoria Racing Club – Anthony Van Dyck
The heartbreaking injury and subsequent euthanasia of Anthony Van Dyck during Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup is still raw for everyone at the Victoria Racing Club (VRC). The Club remains wholeheartedly committed to the welfare of thoroughbreds and will continue to work with the industry to understand the cause of this incident.
We have extended our condolences to trainer Aidan O’Brien and the team that cared for Anthony Van Dyck. We would also like to thank the track and veterinary staff for their prompt and humane care of the horse on Tuesday.
We are continuing to work with the broader industry to improve equine wellbeing and support Racing Victoria as it prepares a fatality report on the cause of loss of Anthony Van Dyck. Following incidents in previous years, the industry has invested significantly in research and technology and implemented a series of initiatives aimed at reducing injuries, especially among international horses.
This is an ongoing objective and the Club strongly supports further work in this area.
