Last year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup winning jockey Craig Williams has once again struck glory on Cup day with the South Australian visitor Alleboom winning the Schweppervescence Plate in determined fashion.
Blitzing his rivals by 5.5-lengths at Morphettville two starts ago, the Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained speedster Alleboom ($3.70 favourite with TAB) brought some quality form from across the border and duly saluted at his first start down the Flemington straight (1000m).
Jockey Craig Williams was adamant that the Spirit of Boom colt would be right in the finish of the three-year-old contest.
“When Richard and Chantelle Jolly bring a horse over they usually have the right one and he ran his heart out for me,” Williams said.
“The straight track can be a bit daunting for some horses, because it’s a straight line when they’re used to running around bends, but Richard and Chantelle Jolly have done a really good job with this horse. He was in his right race today and he gave me a lovely tow at his first look at the straight.”
Despite no crowds on course, Williams said the excitement of Cup day is still well and truly alive.
“Matthew Hill makes the racing by his broadcast and his commentary exciting, so it’s great to acknowledge it and the staff here at Flemington.”
“I know 12 months ago it looked colourful with all the fans here. Unfortunately they’re not here but all the well-wishes I have received through my team, through social media and through my family, I just hope that this race galvanises the country through this pandemic.”
Co-trainer Chantelle Jolly acknowledged that the plan to have Alleboom take on harder opposition than it had been facing in Adelaide had been a plan hatched and delivered just as they had hoped.
“We told Craig to ride him just like he rode Kemalpasa on Saturday and it worked out perfectly.”
