John Thompson’s promising gelding Purple Sector has continued his dominant Sydney form with a determined win in the Furphy Plate (1800m) at Flemington.
Despite not completely handling the anti-clockwise circuit, Purple Sector proved too strong for his opposition and provided Thompson with his second win in the race, having had Tagus win in 2010.
Ridden by 2019 Lexus Melbourne Cup winning jockey Craig Williams, Purple sector narrowly defeated the Logan McGill-trained Gold Fields by a neck margin, with Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra’s Odeon finishing in third.
Trainer John Thompson was delighted with the way his gelding finished off the race.
“Wasn’t comfortable going that way for the first time but once he balanced up in the straight he went well,” Thompson said.
Jockey Craig Williams said it was terrific to see the Dato Tan Chin Nam silks (black and white checks with yellow sleeves) win on the famous day.
“These colours should have been in the race before (the Melbourne Cup),” Williams stated post-race.
“They’re so famous through our Melbourne Cup history with Bart Cummings and Dato Tan Chin Nam and they still keep coming with these colours which is really good. He (Purple Sector) was really dominant last time in Sydney and my manager was really bullish about it, if they could bring this horse down you would love to be on him. I’d like to thank John Thompson and the owners, Duncan Ramage and everyone else for giving me the opportunity today.”
Purple Sector was a well-supported $2.30 favourite with TAB.
